Intro

I've been out of the loop for quite some time, but there's always going to be a few guides available to assist with your possible newfound editing hobby. Here's a guide I saved from back in the day, my own personally made one (WIP), and a couple of others to help get you started.

Fonts

It's best to use a large variety of fonts for things such as sound effects and different character emotions. SFX fonts are all the editor's choice unless the group has preset guidelines already, but the main fonts used for regular text should be easy enough to read and not too thin or thick unless the character is trying to portray a certain feeling. The most common font used tends to be Wilds Words/Anime Ace or its many other derivatives, but I personally prefer having lower and uppercase fonts rather than purely all uppercase. This is, of course, user/reader preference so don't sweat it too much. Just make sure to be consistent!

Basic font packs:

(from kalendel's guide)

http://blambot.com this site also has a lot of good fonts

http://www.dafont.com/ also a good resource. I like a bunch of Kimberly Geswein's fonts (tends to fit the yuri aesthetic IMO).

Practice Test

This test, which we used to use to help test potential incoming editors, has a bit of everything in terms of what one typically looks out for when editing. It doesn't contain a deadly double page merge, however, but that's also the bane of many (including my own) so don't sweat it too much for now.

Notes

If you're looking at these guides to try to join a scanlation group that has a test, please find their releases and take a harder look at what they do as they're going to want quality equal or higher than that as a goal (although not necessarily what it will take to "pass" as they'll likely teach you stuff). This is easier to understand when you have the raw files to compare to but understandably it's not common to just find the raws (you might have better luck looking at the anonymous #chan messageboards or at yuri project for files to compare to).

http://afkrotch.com/dee_es_files/compressor.rar I used to use this to reduce file size a bit after exporting, but I can't remember how to properly do this nowadays. Leaving it here just in case.
